Hot Toddy: A Soothing Cold Remedy

As a child, whenever I was feeling a little under the weather, my mom would always immediately make me a hot toddy which would have me feeling better in no time.  This cozy sweet and sour hot tea would comfort my sore throat, cough, and even just general aches and malaise.  I carried this hot toddy tradition with me to college, then to medical school and beyond, making hot toddies at the first sign of a cold.  Whenever my friends or family started to look a bit green or ghostly, I would whip up a hot toddy and magically, their color and spirits would return to normal.  I am sure it was a combination of the vitamin C and honey packed hot tea as well as the attention that were responsible for the cure.  Even when you don't have a cold, the hot toddy is the perfect soothing drink in any season; not only is it delicious but it is packed with fresh vitamins and nutrients to boost your immune system.

Ingredients:
Juice of one small lemon or half a large lemon
1 heaping tablespoon honey
Your favorite tea (I recommend Earl Grey or Darjeeling but even a Lipton tea bag would do)
1 cup boiling water

Instructions:

Make a cup of hot tea with boiling water and a tea bag (or loose tea).  Add lemon juice and honey and stir.  And that's it!

Enjoy and feel better!
:-)

Ginger tea with honey is also effective in treating severe sore throat which is a common symptom when having a flu. It's good to have these herbal ingredients ready anytime.

This remedy can be incorporated along with other medical management. Sore throat and cough can be very annoying, and taking a ginger tea will surely help soothe the throat.
